The center median project began in 2004 with an idea by a few members of the Cottonwood Community which then banded together to form the Cottonwood Beautification Committee. These original members, Brenda Christian, Mary O'Keeffe, Judith Klages, John Adams, Sr., John Cague and Jack Faulkenbury worked hard to bring to life a great historical reprensentation and art project. The Cottonwood Beautification Committee eventually became the Cottonwood Enrichment Council. None of the original members remain on committee, but the work and project continues.
Currently, the medians are kept up and maintained by volunteer groups who "adopt" the medians similar to how the highways are "adopted." Each of the medians are numbered from south to north.
